G.FAST FIBRE BROADBAND FAQS

What is G.FAST?

G.FAST is the next generation of FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) and uses existing copper cabling from your house to the street cab, and fibre beyond, just like FTTC. The difference, and the reason it’s up to 4 times faster than regular fibre broadband delivered over the same wires is that it uses different data transfer methods which require very short copper parts of the line – usually less than 300metres, but the best speeds are delivered when you’re less than 150m from the street cabinet.

Can everyone get G.Fast?

No, only a small proportion, less than 5%, of UK properties can currently receive G.Fast based fibre broadband. And of the street cabinets and exchanges that are enabled, only properties within 300m of the street cabinet will see any advantage. Properties within 150m see the best speeds (the further away from the street cabinet, the longer the copper line and the lower the speeds).

Can I migrate my existing G.fast connection from another ISP?

Yes, and moving providers is completely FREE with WebMate too. The process normally takes 5-10 working days and only requires a quick password change or new router to be plugged in on “changeover” day. We’ll ensure everything’s ready to minimise downtime, most often less than 1 hour.

Do I need to have a phone line with G.Fast?

Yes, you’ll need to have a phone line as G.Fast uses the same copper-based phone line that voice uses, just like ADSL and FTTC. It is an engineer-installed product so you will get a shiny new G.Fast faceplate on your wall and an Openreach modem that does the G.Fast bits.

What happens for new G.Fast installations?

If this is a new G.Fast connection (even if you current have ADSL or FTTC Fibre) then an engineer appointment will be made, who’ll visit the property and install a new faceplate and modem – as well as connect the WiFi modem we supply (or your own). The process is quick and straight forward normally, generally about an hour slot morning or afternoon. For G.Fast migrations from another ISP, the process does not require an engineer, just a username change on the router (sometimes though, an engineer is required)

What speeds should I expect to see?

The speeds of our packages are based on the maximum speeds the technology handles, but real-world maximum speeds are often 5-10% lower than these anyway. The distance you are from your street cabinet (the length of your copper cable) and the quality of the copper cable are the main factors affecting speed. It’s because the electrical signal which carries your data degrades over distance on copper cabling (it was never designed to take data really). Copper cabling is also very prone to interference from other electrical devices and magnetic fields. Typically within 50m of the cabinet, you’ll get near to full speeds. 100m, 75% of speed, 200m will be about 50% speeds and beyond that a rapid decline to about 25% of speed at 300m.

Why will my actual speeds reduce at peak times?

Whilst G.Fast provides great speeds on it’s own, and WebMate optimise that wherever possible – the cabinet on your street has a limit on how much internet traffic it can send back the exchange. Then your exchange also has a limit of sending internet traffic on to the internet. At peak times, everyone might not be able to get their full speeds. 100 people on your street, all with 330Mbps download would require 330,000Mbps. Simply put, it doesn’t have that much bandwidth available. The good news is that everyone on your street won’t have 330Mbps connections and they won’t necessarily all want to download data all at the same time, so it works out generally okay. Being on a much faster connection than everyone else on your street also means you won’t feel this congestion as much. Bottom line is, you’ll get consistently higher speeds with WebMate G.Fast than ADSL and FTTC neighbours!

What happens if I cancel before the end of my initial 12 month contract?

If you do need to cancel before the end of the 12 month initial contract, you’ll be charged the remaining time left, as if you’d stayed the whole contract. If the connection ceases, rather than migrates to another provider, you’ll also be charged our standard cease fee. This is standard (and imposed by Openreach) for all ISP’s offering G.Fast connections.

Free line installation: New installs are free if you stay with us for 12 months, otherwise there is a £150 plus VAT fee.

Free modem and installation:  Applies to all broadband orders and with no contract, just 30 days notice of termination. Billing periods run from 1st to the 1st of each month, no part-month-refunds, 1 full month notice required should you decide to migrate or cease (ceasing incurs a £32 fee).

Broadband Speeds for ADSL: There are multiple factors that affect your maximum speed including whether your exchange is enabled for 21CN / ADSL 2+, the distance of your line from the exchange, the age and quality of the copper cable to the exchange, the connections in between and any interference along the way.  Our speed estimator bases its results on the distance and speeds recorded from your neighbours and is an indication only. The maximum speed your line can handle is your “sync speed” and not necessarily the speed you’ll get all the time. See our Peak and Off-Peak estimates for indications of real-world speeds when congestion and overheads are taken into account. We always deliver the fastest speeds your line can handle.

Broadband Speeds for Fibre Broadband: Fibre / FTTC is different to ADSL in that the only copper part of the cable is from the street cabinet to your property. From the street cabinet to the exchange is Fibre which does not suffer the same speed loss over distance as copper. Therefore the maximum sync speed of your fibre connection is mainly affected by the copper from your house to your exchange (10-250m will generally give full fibre speeds, 500m will give 50-75%).

Migrating and Cease Fees: Migrations to us are free and we do not make a charge for migrating away. As our broadband network is our own LLU, some providers may charge to move to their LLU network or back to BT’s (phone lines remain with BT so there are no changes/charges moving to another BT-based provider). Ceasing a connection completely does incur a £32 cease fee (this is passed on directly from Openreach and is their charge for physically disconnecting the broadband service at the exchange).

Unlimited Calls:  Include calls to UK landlines only that start with 01, 02, 03 or 08 and for calls under 60 mins only. Calls over 60mins are charged at our standard rates (which are generally cheaper than most providers including BT)

20CN exchanges: If your exchange is not upgraded to support 21 CN you will only be able to get a maximum of 8Mbps down and 800kbps up, and there will be a £5 inc VAT surcharge to the above prices (sorry – it’s three times more expensive for us to provide service to these lines). Additionally, 20CN lines will have a 20GB cap per month. Please contact us for pricing on higher or unlimited caps on these lines.

Timescales: Migrations and new activation on existing lines normally take 7 days. Where a new telephone installation is required this normally takes 14 days (but for new-builds or where engineering works will be required it can take up to 90 days)
