UK Home Broadband (ADSL, FTTC, FTTP Full Fibre and SoGEA) FAQS
Are there any additional setup costs
Some services have setup fees, some don’t – but they are all clearly labelled above and in the order process. Beyond this, there are no hidden extras. If you need a new telephone line installed, the cost is £120 plus VAT for standard line install and continue on a 30 day rolling contract.
How does your money-back guarantee work?
We believe in the quality of our broadband and the service you’ll get from us. If not, simply let us know within your first month with us and we’ll give you your money back and you can migrate away. You must migrate within 14 days and will not be charged further, beyond that and we will charge minus your first month. If you decide to cease your connection – instead of migrating to another provider – you will be charged a £36 plus VAT cease fee as per our normal t&c’s.
How does your price promise work?
We promise not to increase the prices at the end of your initial contract term – you’ll pay the same as any “new customers” would. We only increase prices if wholesale prices go up (which they tend to by around inflation every April) – and if wholesale prices go down, we pass on these savings too!
What's the contract term?
Most of our broadband services come with 18 month contracts. We don’t do “new customer” rates to entice customers so you won’t get stung at the end of the term with a massive price hike either! As you can appreciate, we swallow much of the installation fees, router costs and setup fees at the beginning of the contract to keep your monthly fees down, so we do have to impose an 18 month term. We can offer 12 month or shorter terms on request. Cancelling broadband entirely does attract a £36 plus VAT fee which we pass on directly from Openreach, this does not normally apply if you migrate to another BT-based provider. If you cancel before your initial 18 month term, you wil have to pay to the end of the 18 month contract. Once your 18 months is completed, you move to monthly contract terms – so no need to re-sign a long contract.
What is the model of FREE Router?
We provide high quality TPLink WiFi 6 routers (all AC1800 specification with beamforming and MIMO – models vary depdning on package) that we preconfigure and secure so they are ready to just plug in and go. These also come with a 1year next-day replacement warranty.
IS there any downtime migrating from another ISP?
Not much no – maximum 1 hour. On the “switch” day, your old ISP will stop working at some point, leave for an hour or so and plug in your new router from us (or change your ADSL username on your current router)
Can I enable Parental Controls?
Yes, all of our routers come with parental controls which we can pre setup for you or help you set these up.
What speeds can I expect?
The speed mostly depends on the quality and length of the copper that runs from your house to the street cabinet (or right to the exchange for ADSL connections). So every house is different. However, the estimates we give you are based on this and your neighbours speeds. What we do promise is to ensure you get the maximum speeds your line can handle at all times. Congestion is the next issue that affects speeds. At peak times, your street cabinet and exchange might be overloaded so the total speed is shared out. On our Performa Pro packages, this is lessened, but for all regular home broadband packages, you’ll see lower speeds – typically 25-50% slower. Again it all depends on everyone else on your street or in your town/city and how much bandwidth they are using. For Performa Classic connections, we sometimes throttle lower priority traffic to ensure things like streaming, browsing and email have the speeds they need – at the expense perhaps of big downloads that are not usually as important.
What's the difference between FTTC and FTTP?
These are technology names that can be confusing. FTTC is “Fibre to the cabinet” and means full fibre is laid to the street cabinet, then copper phone line to your house. It’s faster than traditional ADSL which is all copper-cable, but slower than FTTP. FTTP is essentially “Full Fibre” – fibre optic cable from the exchange to your house. FTTP is best as it delivers faster speeds, more reliability and lower latency.
What is SoGEA?
SoGEA is the technical term for when you get fibre broadband without the need for a separate landline – it stands for Single Order Generic Ethernet Access – but for all intents and purposes, it’s FTTC or Full Fibre FTTP broadband with no phone line. It’s usually cheaper than other options and is normally available with speeds of 80Mbps as standard, although 330Mbps and 1Gbps is increasingly more available.
