What is the HostList Ranking Index (HRI)?

The HostList Ranking Index (HRI) is HostList.io’s proprietary scoring system used to rank hosting providers worldwide.

Each provider receives a score out of 100, based on four equally weighted categories:

    • Trust – Reputation, customer reviews and business credibility.
    • Completeness – The quality and completeness of the provider’s profile and technical information.
    • Freshness – How actively the provider maintains and updates its listing.
    • Performance – Independent measurements of website performance and technical capability – using Google CrUX data of real-world website visit measurements.

Each category contributes 25 points, producing a total HRI score out of 100.

Independent Performance Measurement

One of the most interesting parts of the HostList methodology is its approach to measuring performance.

Rather than relying purely on synthetic speed tests, HostList uses Google’s Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) wherever possible.

CrUX is Google’s own dataset containing anonymous, real-world performance data collected from Chrome users across the globe over a rolling 28-day period.

This includes important Core Web Vitals metrics such as:

    • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)
    • Interaction to Next Paint (INP)
    • Time to First Byte (TTFB)
    • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)

Unlike traditional speed tests, these figures reflect how real visitors actually experience a website.

HostList also plans to supplement these measurements with controlled benchmarking, deploying identical websites across different hosting platforms to provide even deeper comparisons.
